If the engine turns over nicely but the thing does not start, it could also be that you have run out of gas. It sound silly, but it CAN happen that the moment you switch the engine off, is the moment you ran out of gas. This happened to my apprentice, and it took us long to figure out what was wrong. So - turn the petcock to "PRE" position (towards the back of the bike) and try again to start. If it starts, turn the petcock to "RES" position (forward). Now the fuel runs from the reserve tank into the engine. It is possible that although you got some gas in your face when opening the pipe there was not enough to make the engine run when petcock was directing the fuel from the ordinary tank.
